We so not want this to continue Olga Dib Sadly this is a real problem with todays parents. If you make an event of every little step a kid takes, they will grow up thinking they're incredible and unique. And some day they'll need to realize, these things are just expected from them without getting celebrated for doing what you're supposed to do Pretty Swag Back in the day we were beaten up for having "low" grades .. which was not low at all but low by Asian parents standard. Only the super nerds survivors the 'report card' day .. others went to the next grade after being thrashed by both parents. Like a handicap match, even the nerdy siblings got beaten up too despite getting good grades because the other siblings got "low" grades. Man those were the days, the entire neighbour hood would be quiet that day and the kids would slowly come out in the evening after the thrashing, the thrashing would be intense if the neighbour kid your parents compared you with all the time got better grades than you, even if it was just 5 marks .. especially when it was for maths exam. LMAO, where my Asian or Indian folks at, who graduated like war torn soldiers. Ryan Lee Alright I want to make one thing straight. It's not "today's parents". Its North America. I had the chance to experience both systems, and honestly you feel much better when you get recognition in the European system, simply because you feel you've actually deserved it, because that recognition is rare. When a "good job" is uttered by a teacher, its once a wee and for a few students, whereas in the North American system, you feel like its forced. Your methods, like "reinforcing motivation" and "everyone gets a trophy" have backfired so much that's its gotten to the point where depression is on the rise because everyone gets told they're special when they're at school, and then get demolished by the real world. Amanda Rose You could say the exact same about birthdays... or anniversaries, or a bunch of other stuff. People like celebrating stuff. Go figure. Janet Ruckemesser Jamillah Al-amin Fuller Why is nobody putting their best movie quotes?? "You think your wife and daughter feel good about you killing in their name? " "My wife and daughter can't feel anything. They're dead. " Alejandro Suez SHAD where u at Misty Boss But it's meant to encourage the kids, give them some positive reinforcement, keep them in school, motivated. Aabroo Fatima Theres this sjw bitch at kids swimming class that wants her kid to get a medal after every class to keep the motivation up Dionne Redman That's my all time favourite, true there were some long deep ones or short yell ones, but this one just stuck with me Jacqui Cooper There was a study that showed that participation trophy actually made kids feel bad in general. The ones that came first feel they haven't achieved anything, and the ones that came last feel embarrassed about getting a trophy, even though they lost. Parents need to teach their kids how to do their very best, not just participate. They need to learn how to lose, how to win, how to improve themselves, and how to improve others Murtaza Kothari We truly like to complain about everything. Where I'm from, the switch from 4th to 5th grade means the end of primary school, and it's the same in a lot of places. Some kids go to a different school altogether, some get assigned to different classes, so everything is new. Is it that bad that we tend to make a little celebration out of it? Evangeline Cabiles Betcha most of the bitter, old twentysomethings in the comments here celebrate birthdays. Or New Years Eve. Or July 4th, or any anniversary at all. But sure, celebrate something you've actually accomplished, and you're a speacial PC snowflake frappe made of glass. Please try to make sense, people... Candy Mason To be fair, you only get this for successfully finishing the year, it's not a participation award because there'll still be losers Ester Jamisola Iron Man 3 : Maya Hansen: What happened? Fun fact; before he built rockets for the Nazis, the idealistic Werner von Braun dreamed of space travel, he star gazed. Do you know what he said when the first V2 hit London? The rocket performed perfectly, it just landed on the wrong planet. See we all begin wide-eyed, pure science. And then the ego steps in, the obsession. And you look up, you’re a long way from shore.
