Mứt tắc hình hoa được làm từ những trái tắc chín mộng nước. Mứt có vị ngọt, chua, cay hấp dẫn, được tỉa thành hình hoa mai 5 canh đem đến may mắn cho những ngày Tết đầu năm.
Trái tắc tươi rửa sạch và cho vào âu nước muối lao loãng ngâm trong 2 tiếng (giúp trái tắc sạch và khi ra thành phẩm mứt sẽ bảo quản được lâu hơn, có độ dẻo mà không cần ngâm qua nước vôi hay phèn chua). Tiếp theo, bổ trái tắc thành hình hoa 5-6 cánh và nhẹ nhàng bóp hết phần nước tắc phía bên trong. Tiếp theo ta ngâm với đường trong ít nhất 3 tiếng để đường ngấm vào tận vỏ đến khi sên mứt sẽ có màu trong.
Sau khi ngâm đường xong ta đổ 1 bát nhỏ nước cam vắt vào và cho vào xoong và đặt lên bếp và bắt đầu sên mứt. Lúc đầu để lửa to đến khi sôi ta hạ lửa bé nhất sên mứt trong 30-40 phút. Thỉnh thoảng, đảo nhẹ tay cho mứt được ngấm đều nhau, đến khi nước cam đường cạn sệt, ta bắt đầu tắt bếp và để mứt ra phên cho nguội.
Bảo quản trong lọ thủy tinh hoặc gốm sứ sạch. Mứt tắc sau khi sên vỏ tắc có độ trong vắt và vẫn giữ nguyên được màu vàng tươi đẹp mắt.
